Gwendolyn Horton

Feb 9, 1947 – Mar 30, 2014

Racine – Gwendolyn Horton, 67, affectionately known to her husband as “Love Bone”, received the promise of eternal life on Sunday, March 30, 2014.  She was born in Aberdeen, MS, on February 9, 1947, daughter of the late Danny Broyles and Helen Terrell.

Gwendolyn was united in marriage to Burnett Horton on October 9, 1976, in Chicago, IL.

Gwendolyn was educated in the schools of Mississippi and received an Associate degree following high school in San Antonio, TX.  She would have celebrated her fifty year high school class reunion next month in Mississippi.  Gwendolyn worked in the shipping department for Bucyrus-Erie in Milwaukee until her retirement.  Following her retirement, she faithfully served as a spiritual leader all over the country.  Gwendolyn and Burnett loved to travel and have been to all fifty states.  They also have travelled Mexico together.  Burnett and Gwendolyn have been faithful members of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Racine.  She was Vice-President of Missions, a Prayer Warrior, and participated in Wednesday Bible Study at St. Paul.  Gwendolyn enjoyed spending her free time in her flower garden appreciating God’s beautiful creations.  She will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends.

Gwendolyn leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Burnett Horton of Racine; son, Olanda (Carles) Hankle of Williamsburg, VA; spiritual children, Phoebe (Terry) Presson of Ft. Meyers, FL, Stephanie Bostic of Racine, Daphne Gerald of Naperville, IL; siblings, Jann (Leonard) Broyles of Aurora, IL, Patrick (Dorothy) Gordon of Oklana, MS, Johnny Gordon of San Antonio, TX, and Michelle Gordon of Tupelo, MS.  Gwendolyn was a woman who truly reflected God’s love for His people and, therefore, also leaves many relatives and dear friends too numerous to mention.

In addition to her parents, Gwendolyn is preceded in death by her brother, Donald Gordon.

A celebration of Gwendolyn’s homegoing will take place on Friday, April 4, 2014, 11:00am, at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 1120 Grand Avenue, with Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby, Sr. officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00am until the time of the service.  A private interment will take place at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a “Thank You” to the Aurora Cancer Center, Dr. Michael Mullane and his staff, and the staff of Hospice Alliance for the love and care given to Gwendolyn during her time of need.  God bless all of you!

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. The death of a loved one is not easy to deal with. I have found much comfort in God’s promises when I have lost loved ones in my life. I would like to share what Revelation 21:4 says: “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.۝ I hope you will also find encouragement and hope in this wonderful promise. My heart goes out to you.

Testimonials

December 18, 2024

Words cannot even begin to express the tremendous gratitude our family has for a team like the one at Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home & Crematory. Thank you for the gentle lovely care over our mother Delia (Rosa) Balderas. Never having had a direct experience with a funeral home to this extent we didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t have a clue that they would step right in and have the most comforting team surrounding us that thought of ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING for anyone in our position. It was very evident from the first discussion on the phone that they were already well prepared to handle every little detail for us that we weren’t even aware would be required. Mark and his team truly eased so much of the unknown worries right out of our path, and left room for us to just focus on the small personal details we wanted for our mom. It was nice to know that all cost involved was in black and white on their site as well as on paper at our first meeting. Leaving no room for question or doubt what so ever with any fee involved. It was truly a blessing to have everything written out so well and simplified with various price range options in a time that we needed crystal clear direction. Its been beautiful to see that their care and service didn’t stop after our mom’s service came to an end. They continue to be in communication with immediate responses as questions arise along the way. God bless Mark, and the entire compassionate team, to be around to guide many many more for generations to come through life’s most difficult times. You are all truly amazing.
