Yorkville – Dan Schmidt died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct 25 at the age of 72. Throughout his life, Dan loved nothing more than to share a laugh, a drink, and a story with his family and friends. A natural host, Dan often held court in his basement bar, which doubled as a shrine to his beloved Green Bay Packers. Dan was a proud member of the BAC Local 4 union for over 50 years. He loved to reminisce (and brag, just a little) about the work he’d done as he drove by his former construction sites. Bricklaying wasn’t only his job; it was his craft. In retirement, he found a new passion: carving intricate and beautiful walking sticks. He took great joy in gifting his masterpieces to those close to him. When he wasn’t hunting up north with the guys, Dan loved taking relaxing family trips to Colorado and Florida. At home, he could usually be found endlessly throwing the tennis ball for his two beloved chocolate labs or brewing a new batch of beer. Dan Schmidt was a true sweetheart of a guy. He was one of those rare, genuine people that is universally likeable. He made the world a richer place for those who were lucky enough to know him. He’ll be missed dearly.

Dan is survived by his wife Peggy, daughter Tracey (Dave) White and son Jeff (Barb) Schmidt. His other children Alex (Melissa) Seidel, Kyle DeRosier (Jamie Kulma) and the best grandchildren anyone could ask for: Stephanie, Zach, Reed, Erich, Jack and Emery. His sister Sharon (Rick) White. The most loving nieces and nephews. His hunting buddies and cabin mates Bucky, Mike, Jeff, Erich, Bob, Frank, and Jack. His dogs Bailey and Java.  The family outlaws: Elaine, Bill, Lin, Di, Frank, Bob, and Bonnie. Many other extended family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Rudy and Irene Schmidt, father-in-law Bill Seidel, nephew Paul White, and many favorite aunts and uncles.

A Memorial Service will be held in the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at 6:00 pm. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Private burial will take place in West Lawn Memorial Park.

Dan was 7 years older than me. Those 7 years placed us in a different group when growing up. I know he was always nice to me when we ran into each other at family functions. But those 7 years are really nothing as we grow older. I wish we could have had more family reunions over the years. Staying in touch like that is a great way to spend an afternoon. Nothing beats family.
    God bless you Dan

Testimonials

Thank you so very much for the exemplary care that you provided for both our mom and dad. Your family is extremely kind and exudes much empathy towards others. You and your staff display much professionalism with great talent and attention to detail. Mom and dad were always very particular in their appearance. Mom would say, You are leaving a lasting impression of yourself with someone to remember you by. Your parents taught you boys well; be very proud of that! Love on them, as death is so very permanent.

Holly and I are officially orphans now. It is people like your family and David Huck being there for us, that bring comfort when you are going through one of the most difficult challenges life throws at you.

I thank God every day for our Ostergaard family and will always cherish the memories.

Love you,

Jody Burlingame Wagner
