Shirley’s Homegoing will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025 at 11: 00 a.m. at the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery.  A visitation will take place on Friday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Shirley Mae Murry, age 76, of Racine, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

She was born on August 18, 1948, in Myrtle, MS, a daughter of the late W.L. and Willie Mae (nee: Waldrop) Rutherford. Shirley received Christ at an early age and her faith guided her throughout her life. Later in life, she became a member of Hope City Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, spending time with her family, and talking to her daughter Chudney about Tyler Perry TV shows.

Shirley moved to Racine as a teenager and graduated from Washington Park High School.  She took pride in raising her children and ensured they had the tools needed to thrive. Her unwavering love, determination, and sacrifices were a testament to her incredible strength.

Family was the center of Shirley’s world, and she cherished every moment spent with loved ones. Known for her caring heart, she brought joy and comfort to those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and perseverance. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and provide comfort for others when they lost a loved one. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know her.

Shirley was employed with Samina Corp. for more than 20 years before retiring in 2009, and as of late had been employed by a group home.

Survivors include her special friend, James Price;  her daughters, Catrina S. Francis and Chudney L. Murry; her grandchildren, Khadijah M. Francis, Brian K. (Kiara) Ivy Jr., Imani L. Francis, and Ariyanna S. Clarke; her great grandchildren, Myanna N. Ivy, Ja’Sion S. Ivy, Za’Kari J. Ivy, and Brison D. Ivy; her Godson, Gary “Pookie Man” Brooks; her sisters, Billie Rutherford and Gladys (Norman) Tracey; her brothers, J.W. (Virginia Ann) Rutherford, and Bobby Pratt, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, to include Sherry Cannon, who was like a younger sister.

Along with her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Christine Nellum, and her God daughter and niece, Jennifer Brooks.

To Chudney and Catrina I send my deepest condolences. Sorry I wasn’t able to be there. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Your mother was special. I always thanked her for the kindness she showed my daughter and grandchildren. It was like she couldn’t do enough for them when they were growing up. With her smile, love just shined through. I know you will miss her but just remember those wonderful memories you made with her. May God comfort and keep you.
