May 10, 1924 – Jan 7, 2014

Racine – Calvin Roy Svoboda, age 89, passed away peacefully at Wheaton Franciscan – All Saints Medical Center on Tuesday, January 7, 2014.

A lifetime resident, Calvin was born in Racine on May 10, 1924 to the late Charles and Olive (nee: Smerchek) Svoboda. He faithfully served our country with the United States Navy in WWII. On July 29, 1944, he was united in marriage with the love of his life, Delores Jean (nee: Radewitz) Svoboda, who preceded him in death on May 17, 2003.

With a tireless work ethic, Calvin was employed by Progressive Dairy and then later at Raymond School as a stationary engineer. He was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church. Among his interests, Calvin enjoyed travel, yard work and bird watching.

Surviving are his children, Suzanne (Frank) Blasi, Cynthia (Robert) Klein, Robin Svoboda, Cori (Robert) Helvick and Keith Svoboda; grandchildren, Christopher (Lucy) Blasi, Patrick (Vicky) Blasi, Troy (Janine) Carls, Jennifer (Chad) Lawrence, Paul (Angela) Funk, Steven (Amy) Helvick and Michael Helvick; 12 great-grandchildren, Danielle, Nicole, Rachel, Sara, Zachary, Brandon, Cayleb, Noah, Callie, Aidan, Alexander and Zachary; niece, Lori (Darrell) Redmond; other dear relatives and friends – too numerous to mention by name.

In addition to his parents and wife, Calvin was preceded in death by his sisters, Doris Nilo and Pearl Kreuser; aunt, Eva Smerchek; brothers-in-law, Edward, John and Stanley Radewitz; and sisters-in-law, Mary Despins, Helen DeThorne and Henrietta Pomeday.

Private family funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Entombment followed in the mausoleum of Holy Cross Cemetery.

Testimonials

Thank you for your attention to detail

Thank you so much for your staff’s gentle, patient, and thorough management of my nephew’s memorial service yesterday. It was run to perfection, and we couldn’t be more pleased. From the beautiful slide show transitions to the quality audio system to the easels, pedestals and Kringle…all details were impeccable and appreciated.
