It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary William Vinkavich, a beloved husband, father, and friend, who left us peacefully on May 10, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on December 20, 1939, in Racine, Wisconsin, Gary lived a life characterized by quiet strength and unwavering dedication to those he loved.

Gary proudly served in the United States Navy as a radar man and payroll officer, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a deep sense of duty. On July 21, 1962, he married the love of his life, Karen Russell, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Racine. Their partnership was marked by mutual respect, laughter, and a commitment to family that will resonate in the hearts of all who knew them.

For over three decades, Gary devoted himself to his career at SC Johnson Wax, where he served as a unit manager before retiring in 1999. He was known for his humility and never sought the spotlight; instead, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether it was a round of golf with friends or a quiet day on Lake Michigan with his fishing rod in hand, Gary embraced every moment with enthusiasm. An avid golfer, an enthusiastic fisherman, and a passionate hunter, particularly of grouse, he relished time spent outdoors, creating memories that will live on in the stories shared by loved ones.

Gary is survived by his devoted wife of over 62 years, Karen Vinkavich; their two sons, Steve (Toni) Vinkavich, Russ (Gina) Vinkavich; grandchildren, Max (Kaylynn) Vinkavich, Samantha Vinkavich, Carly Vinkavich, Tony (Cori) Rabinek, Justin (Karisa) Rabinek; great-grandchildren, Annabelle Kunde, River, Sawyer, Fallon and Hank Rabinek; sister, Bonnie Wunsch; other relatives and dear friends too numerous to mention. His absence will be felt deeply by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, William and Virginia Vinkavich; and brother-in-law, Jim Wunsch.

A memorial service to honor Gary’s life will be held Thursday, May 22,2025 at Draeger Langendorf Funeral Home 11AM with the visitation from 9:30AM to the time of service.

The interment will be held privately for family.

In reflecting on Gary’s life, we remember a man who never needed to be loud to make a lasting impression. He showed us the importance of humility, the power of quiet moments, and the joy of living in harmony with nature and family. As we say goodbye, let us carry his memory forward, cherishing the lessons he imparted and the love he shared.

Testimonials

Thank you so very much for the exemplary care that you provided for both our mom and dad. Your family is extremely kind and exudes much empathy towards others. You and your staff display much professionalism with great talent and attention to detail. Mom and dad were always very particular in their appearance. Mom would say, You are leaving a lasting impression of yourself with someone to remember you by. Your parents taught you boys well; be very proud of that! Love on them, as death is so very permanent.

Holly and I are officially orphans now. It is people like your family and David Huck being there for us, that bring comfort when you are going through one of the most difficult challenges life throws at you.

I thank God every day for our Ostergaard family and will always cherish the memories.

Love you,

Jody Burlingame Wagner
