James Walter Sowinski

Apr 1, 1951 – Feb 24, 2006

JAMES WALTER SOWINSKI RACINE – James (Jimmy) Walter Sowinski, 54, died peacefully at All Saints Medical Center on Friday, February 24, 2006, after a lengthy and courageous struggle with many complications from diabetes. He was born on April 1, 1951, to the late Walter and Elizabeth (nee: Brish) Sowinski. He was a graduate of Washington Park High School, The University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. For over 25 years, he was a math teacher at Case High School. In many ways, the Case High School staff and students were his second family. Jimmy was a dedicated Badger football fan and greatly enjoyed attending games. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his ability to meet the challenges of his disease. Jimmy is survived by his sister, Diane (Jim) Lueke of Glenbeulah, WI; two nieces, Valerie (Craig) Kaiser of Howards Grove, WI and Sarah (Christopher Rosen) Lueke of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; two grand nieces, Haleigh Kaiser and Caitlyn Kaiser, other relatives and many friends. Private services were held at Holy Cross Cemetary in Racine and an informal gathering was held to celebrate Jimmy’s life. His family would like to extend a special thank you to all Jimmy’s friends who faithfully supported him through his illness, especially Pete Clouthier, Paul Eberly, Jim Hamilton, Frank Skvarca and Bill Wilms. Contributions to The Jim Sowinski Scholarship Fund at Case High School can be made in Jimmy’s memory. Condolences to the family can be e-mailed to Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home – draeger-langendorf.com.

    To the sowinski family:
I realize we do not know each other. But, mr.sowinski was the absolute most dedicated math teacher I had. I had mr.sowinski for pre algebra @ case from 1990 – 1992 . I remember mr.sowinski being a direct and yet compassionate with his students. I occasionally, had much difficulty with pre- algebra @ case and mr. Sowinski always went the extra mile on helping me out ,even if it meant helping me out in detention hall when he was over looking the kids goofed that got in trouble. I very rarely was in detention but, when I was , it seemed like he was ,Lol…. I learned alot from mr. Sowinski’s gruff, yet direct and helpful side. I was wondering for the last 10 to 15 years how he’s been. Sadly , I came across his entombment at holy cross cemetery on monday early evening…. very sad, to see. I had much respect for him , as he was a true individual who loved doing what he did @ case high school, and I always respected his way of teaching…. on my personal note to mr. Sowinski, i just wanted to tell you ,” thank you mr. Sowinski, and you definitely were one of a kind math teacher , who truly helped me in my struggles. Thank you for your help , guidance and patience mr. Sowinski!… till , we meet again! And of course, GO BADGERS AND CASE EAGLES !!”

Mark & staff, you were so welcoming and loving you made us feel like we were at home. Your service & attention to detail was above & beyond anything I’ve ever seen & this did not go unnoticed by those who attended. I cannot express the gratitude we feel for making our father’s showing & funeral a peaceful, respectful, & dignified event.
