With the love of her family, and surrounded by angels, Granny, as she is affectionately known, passed away peacefully, and went home to be with her Heavenly Father, on November 7, 2010. Granny was born on November 30, 1930 in Myrtle Mississippi to the late Dewey and Rosie King (Pickens). She retired from St. Mary’s Hospital in 1992. After retirement, she worked at First Step Daycare, and then went on to volunteer at Harmony House Residential Living Center. She considered these endeavors her second career.
She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church. Prior to her illness, she worked on several committees at the church.
Granny was an avid collector of Angels and salt and pepper shakers. As a routine part of her day, she loved to watch her TV shows; especially All My Children which she watched religiously for years. She also enjoyed traveling to places like Door County and Hawaii.
Granny is survived by her children Lester (Linda), Marilyn, Roger (Diana), of Racine and Peggy of Atlanta. She is also survived by her siblings, Murphy King (Chris), AB King (Barbara) of Rockford, Illinois, Eteria McWilliams, Gladys Ivy, Clarence King (Vicky) of Racine, Lillie Graham of Toledo, Ohio, and her very special baby sister and caregiver to the end, Canary Gardner (Lonnie) of Myrtle Mississippi. She leaves 15 surviving grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She also leaves many special nieces and nephews that loved her deeply. She had many, many special friends, including her lifelong friends, Grace Little and Mary Moore. She was also especially close to her prayer partner, Toni Day. and her neighbor and friend of many years, Maggie Cobb. She was preceded in death by her Mother and Father, a daughter Sandra, a son Steve, and brother Lawrence (Lurlean).
Family and friends are invited to meet at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. for the celebration on her Homegoing with Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby officiating. There will be a visitation in the church on Thursday from 10-11. Her burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery.
