Marie Z. Wabakken

Apr 6, 1917 – Dec 6, 2011

Racine- Marie Z. (nee: Dupuis) Wabakken, 94, passed away peacefully at Vista Medical Center – East in Waukegan, IL on Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

The youngest of six children, Marie was born in Escanaba, MI on April 6, 1917 to the late Moise and Adelle (nee: Blake) Dupuis. The family moved to Racine when Marie was age five. She attended St. John Nepomuk School and graduated from William Horlick High School. On February 4, 1937 she was united in marriage to Walter L. Wabakken at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church.

In December of 1967, they moved to Dallas, TX where they lived for over 25 years. Marie retired from the Dallas Independent School District in 1982. Shortly after the death of Walter in 1984, Marie moved back to Racine and, later, to Sturtevant.

With a devout Christian faith, Marie was an active member of St. Lucy Catholic Church. Among her interests, she enjoyed all kinds of craft work and was also an accomplished quilter. She loved to bake and will be remembered for her scrumptious apple and pecan pies.

Surviving are her sons, Dan (Sharon) Wabakken of Kenosha and Alan (Elsa) Wabakken of Cedar Hill, TX; grandsons, Scott Wabakken of Madison, WI and Erik Wabakken of Manhattan, KS; nieces, Marilyn (Lubin) Tashoff, Irene Dell and Ida Sikora; nephews, Robert Clark, John (Sandy) Clark, Harold (Marilyn) Clark and Bruce Hatcher; other special relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name.

In addition to her parents and husband, Marie was preceded in death by her sisters, Mabel Clark and Sr. M. Excelsa OSF; and brothers, Bill, Roy and Clifford Dupuis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 12, 2011 at 11:00 am in St. Lucy Catholic Church, 3101 Drexel Ave., with Rev. Mark R. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be in the church on Monday from 9:30 – 11:00 am. In memory of Marie, memorials to St. Lucy Church have been suggested.

We are saddening about Marie’s passing, but we know she is in heaven. She was such a giving person and was such a good friend to my family all the years she lived in the Dallas area. She and Wabby were grandparents to my four children and they will always hold those memories in there hearts.
I still have all her good recipes for cookies, fancy sandwiches and her carved watermelons.
She will forever be in our hearts.

Testimonials

May 25, 2021

My family wants to thank you and your team for all that you did to walk along side us in my mom’s death and celebration of life. You all did an amazing job with such care, concern of details, and sensitivity to our family. I know my moms body was treated respectfully in your care and that meant the world to us to have confidence in that.
