
Racine –The family is sad to announce the death of Mrs. Mary (nee: Crewe) Rome who died peacefully Sunday evening, October 14, 2012 at the Ridgewood Care Center, where she has been for two weeks in rehab. Mary was born in Racine to Kenneth Owen and Marie (nee: Kersten) Crewe on January 4, 1924. On May 30, 1968 she was joined in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony at St. Edward Catholic Church – Racine, to James Rome who preceded her in death on January 14, 2004. Her parents; brother, Dr. David O. Crewe; and step-son, Ronald Rome, also predeceased her.
Mary is survived by her brother, the Reverend Ronald O. Crewe; step-children, Judith Sieber and Bruce (Lisa) Rome; step-grandchildren, Elizabeth (Joseph) Garant and Jonathan (Darcy) Sieber. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Theresa (nee: Andrea) Crewe; nieces and nephews, Mary (Michael) Salsieder, Beth (Paul) Schneider, Dr. David (Carolyn) Crewe, Sara (Ray) Falci, Timothy (Jane) Crewe and John (Marcella) Crewe; grand-nieces and nephews.
Mary attended St. Edward Grade School and is a 1941 graduate of Washington Park High School. Mary went on to graduate from Marquette University School of Nursing in 1945 – B.S. and R.N.; and Dominican College in 1956 with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. Her first employment as a nurse was at Sunnyrest Sanitorium on the same territorial footprint as the Ridgewood Care Center, where she passed away. Mary practiced nursing at St. Mary’s and St. Luke’s Hospitals in Racine; the Veterans Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska; as the office nurse for Dr. L.W. Smith in Racine; as well as private-duty nursing throughout the years. She taught at St. Dominic School in Sheboygan and, for a score of years, at Roosevelt Elementary School in Kenosha.
Mary has been a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church – Racine for over 43 years and the Racine Retired Nurses Association. Mary and her husband, Jim, lived a very active life together – involved in their beloved community of Racine with various organizations and volunteer groups. Until three weeks before she died, Mary lived independently at the Parkview Senior Community where she was very happy. Throughout her life, Mary has been loved, respected and will be sadly missed by many.
The Funeral Mass for Mrs. Mary Rome will be offered on Friday, October 19, 2012 at 10:30 am in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1533 Erie Street. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Visitation will be in the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Thursday from 5:00 – 7:30 pm and in the church on Friday from 9 am – 10:15 am. Memorials to St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Racine Dominican Sisters at Siena Center are suggested.
