Racine – Raymond Sigurd Slaasted, 88, received the promise of eternal life on Sunday, March 3, 2013. He was born in Warrens, WI, on November 28, 1924, son of the late Sigurd Emil and Hansena (nee: Nelson) Slaasted. On August 14, 1948, Raymond was united in marriage to the love of his life, Lois Irene Christensen, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
Ray graduated from Park High School in 1943. He then faithfully served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 until 1946. He was a navigator on a B-29 bomber as well as serving in the Air Transport Command. Ray then attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison and graduated in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He worked at Modine Manufacturing from 1951 to 1986, where he retired as the Engineering Manager.
Ray enjoyed playing golf, cribbage, and sharing time on his motorcycle with Lois. In his later years, he enjoyed going to breakfast with the gang at River Run. Above all, Ray was a family man and cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren not only loved but admired him. Ray’s legacy includes these generations of family members that will not only cherish their time with him but do their best to live the rest of their lives as he did – caring for those around us, being patient and understanding, showing our loved ones how proud of them we are and always trying to make your life about your loved ones and not yourself. He will be dearly missed by all who loved and admired him.
Ray leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of over 64 years, Lois Slaasted of Racine; children, Janet Drier of Racine, Robert (Joette) Slaasted of Cedarburg, Eric (Nini del Rosario) Slaasted of Huntington Beach, CA, Michael Slaasted of Racine; grandchildren, Steven Drier of Milwaukee, Sarah (Russ Kaminski) Drier of Racine, Sienna (Tom) Moore of Minneapolis, MN, Kai (Kate) Slaasted of Chicago, IL; great-grandchildren, Francis Moore, Benjamin Slaasted; other relatives and dear friends too numerous to mention. In addition to his parents, Ray is preceded in death by his siblings, Lillian Drier, Thomas Slaasted, Alice Hansen, Arnold Slaasted; and sister-in-law, Grace J. “Bonnie” Christensen.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 11, 2013, 11:00am, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 3319 Washington Avenue, with Rev. Jane Fryda officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00am until the time of the service. Private interment will take place at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery on a later date. The family has suggested memorials to Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
The family would like to send a special “Thank You” to Dymphna Waldron and Sarah Drier. Ray would not have been able to be home for so long without the love and care that you gave to him. God bless you!
