Percy E. Murray, PHD. Retied Emeritus Professor of History at North Carolina Central University, Durham, NCessor says
I am sorry that I was not able to attend Milton’s services on April 22, 2024 because of illness. Milton was a former student of mine in the History Department at North Carolina Central University when I served as Chair of the Department. He received his BA and MA in our department and I am pleased to have served as his advisor. Milton followed the long line of outstanding historians from NCCU; first and foremost Dr. E. E. Thorpe, Dr. W. Sherman Jackson and me, Percy E. Murray. He begin our fourth generation of producing PHDs in history by accepting the invitation to Miami University(Ohio) following our advice and and continued by having a long career in the profession. Milton and his wife GeorgAnn honored me by allowing me to serve as his best man in their wedding. We will long remember Milton’s outstanding oratorial skills, powerful lecturer, explementary researcher and scholar and he will long be remembered in the annals of the Department of History at NCCU. May our Lord and savior grant you peace and comfort at this time in your family’s life.

We would like to extend our condolences to you on the death of Milton Dockery. We are sorry that we missed the services because of illness. Milton was a former student of mine in the History Department at North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC. He received as BA and MA degrees from our department and went on to become a fourth-generation historian following in the legacy established by Dr. John Hope Franklin, Dr. E. E. Thorpe, Dr. W. Sherman Jackson and me, Dr. Percy E. Murray. He honored me in two ways by pursuing his doctorate at Miami University (Ohio) and asking me to be the best man in his wedding. He was an outstanding orator, lecturer, scholar and friend. He will be missed at professional history meetings, and we will include him in the annals of the department. May our Lord and savior grant us the peace during this difficult time in your lives.
