vet
Aug 10, 1922 – Apr 9, 2012

Racine– Robert LeRoy Kirkendoll, Jr., 89, passed away unexpectedly… yet peacefully….at his home on Monday, April 9, 2012.

Bob was born in Scranton, Iowa on August 10, 1922 to the late Frank and Florence (nee: Ayers) Kirkendoll. A 1942 graduate of Washington Park High School, he went on to faithfully serve our Country with the United States Navy as a Machinist’s Mate First Class aboard the USS Kewee and USS Chipola in WWII from 1942-46.

On November 9, 1946 in St. Edward Catholic Church, Bob was united in marriage with the love of his life, Eleanor Ruth (nee: Jander) Kirkendoll, who preceded him in death on November 4, 2009.

Bob was employed by Western Publishing for over 35 years, retiring in 1985. In retirement, Bob served nearly 10,000 volunteer hours with Saint Mary’s – All Saints Medical Center Auxiliary. He was a member of the VFW Post #10301. Among his interests, Bob enjoyed woodworking, ceramics, fishing and hunting.

Surviving are his sister, Shirley Teigland; brother-in-law, James Hawes; many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name. In addition to his parents and wife, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, John (Helen) Kirkendoll; brothers-in-law, Ronald (Pat) Jander and Frank Tiegland; and sisters-in-law, Irma (Wally) Kotoff, Adeline (Rev. Oliver) Carlson and Eunice Hawes.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 10:30 am with Rev. Mark R. Jones officiating. Entombment, with military honors, will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Saturday from 9-10:30 am.  In memory of Bob, memorials to St. Lucy Church or to one’s favorite charity have been suggested.

A heartfelt note of thanks to Bob’s wonderful neighbors, Don and Debbi; Rick and Eva; for yourfriendship and for everything you have done for Bob and Eleanor throughout the years. They truly appreciated all your kindness and generosity.
