Wanda M. Skupniewicz, 79, passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2010. She was born in Janesville, WI on March 10, 1931, the daughter of the late Leo and Katherine (Pukropp) Kropp. Mrs. Skupniewicz graduated with a Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. On June 18, 1955, in St. Rose Catholic Church, she married Dr. Raymond E. Skupniewicz. Ray and Wanda supported each other in marriage for 54 years. In her younger days Wanda worked at the Racine Public library. She was an accomplished painter and member of the Racine Art Guild. With her husband, Wanda attended St. Edward Catholic Church. She accompanied her husband, her sister and brother-in-law Vicky, and Gene, and a multitude of family and friends, sailing on Lake Michigan. Wanda loved her husband, her family and — ardently — her books. Wanda struggled with illness most of her adult life, but her vision and her love of reading stayed with her. She leaves a large collection of books; her self-written “Book Will” requests that these books stay in the family. Not known to all is that Wanda had a dry sense of humor and a sneaky way a teasing. In her later years she liked being treated as a queen, and acquired the nickname “Queenie”. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Raymond E. Skupniewicz; their children, Chuck Skupniewicz, of Salinas, CA, Irene (Robert) Smith, of Sunnyvale, CA, and George (Gail Klein) Skupniewicz, of Madison, WI; 6 grandchildren, Joe, Dan, Henry, and Ellie Skupniewicz, Olivia and Monica Smith; former daughter-in-law Linda Skupniewicz, of Salinas, CA; sister, Verna “Vicky” (Gene) Brittian, of Waukesha, WI; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Jeanne Shuda, and Ernie (Darlene) Skupniewicz, all of Steven Point, WI. Her nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends further survive her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers who died suddenly from meningitis at ages 5 and 7. The family would like to thank the all the home care givers, home workers, neighbors, friends, and the staff at Becker Shoop who cared for Wanda, and continues caring for Ray, with dignity and kindness. Care givers remembered fondly (pardon if this is not complete!) include Bonnie, Vessie, Salute, Mena, Zeta, Rommy and Mary Ann. The family also wants to thank the kind hospice workers. Mass will be celebrated in St. Edward Catholic Church, 15th and Grove Ave., at 1:30 p.m., on Monday, June 14th with Rev. Allen Bratkowski officiating. Visitation will be in the church on Monday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the Mass. Entombment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery Garden Crypts. In keeping with Wanda’s love for books, the family has suggested memorials to either of the libraries of St. Catherine’s High School or St. Edward’s School, Racine, WI.
