Racine – Carolyne Marie Luettgen, age 94, passed away peacefully at Parkview Gardens on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Special note of thanks to AccentCare Hospice and Parkview Gardens for the compassionate care and support given in Carolyne’s time of need.
Carolyne was born in Kenosha on February 18, 1930 to the late Arthur and Erna (nee: Kehrberg) Werner. She attended Friedens Ev. Lutheran School and graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School. Carolyne worked at a fabric store and at Jockey before moving onto Farm and Fleet in Sturtevant. She worked from 1990 to retirement in 2005 primarily as head cashier.
Carolyne married after high school and raised two boys, David and Richie. In December 1982, Carolyne married the love of her life, Harold J. Luettgen. Sadly, he passed away in October 2000. Harold and Carolyne enjoyed traveling the world even though Harold went blind. They especially enjoyed the travel and learn trips. She traveled often with the “Happy Travelers” group. Both were founding members of “Friends of Seniors”. Harold was their first president and Carolyne served as secretary and crochet instructor for 20 years. Both were involved with the Racine Lions Club and the Racine Pleasure Club for the Blind. Carolyne was a member of the Racine Red Hat Society.
Carolyne was a proud member of Bethania Lutheran Church where she was involved for decades in the Bethania Alter Guild and also enjoyed working in the church’s “Thread by Thread” ministry. Among her many interests were crochet, knitting, sawing, stained glass, glass fusion, beading, tatting and needlepoint. She loved to crochet; a skill she learned as a girl during the Depression. She was a master crocheter, winning numerous awards at the Racine County Fair for various crafts.
Surviving are her son, David Towle (Sandy) of Merrill, WI; step-children, Harold (Jane) Luettgen of Fort Collins, CO; Charles (Sun) Luettgen of Summerville, SC; Allen (fiancé, Patty) of Albuquerque, NM; Susan (Kenneth) Gipp of Racine and Patricia (Kevin) Colloton of Tomahawk, WI; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Carolyne was preceded in death by beloved son, Richard Towle; brother, Donald and his wife, Alice Werner; and sister, Norine (Ronald) Krome.
