RACINE – Douglas J. Garavalia, Sr., 81, passed away at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee on September 16, 2022, after a long, hard fought battle with cancer.
He was born in LaCrosse on April 10, 1941, the son of the late Vincent John and Mary Catherine (nee Trussoni) Garavalia. After high school, he served his country with the US Air Force during the Vietnam Era. He moved to Racine in 1963 where he would have a long career at Styberg Engineering, retiring as plant manager in 2009 after 45 years of service.
Doug enjoyed gardening, reading, and traveling to Las Vegas and Florida to visit friends.
He is survived by his son, Doug (Christina) Garavalia, Jr. of Richland Center; his grandchildren, Vincent John (Anna) Garavalia and Ocean (Mike) Swenson; as well as dear friends, David and Karen Fiskum, Laurie Powell, and Karen Skow. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Karen Ann (nee Anderson) on July 4, 2007; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence (Vera) Garavalia, Gregory (Ardyce) Garavalia, Carl Garavalia and Ralph Garavalia and his dear friend, Roger Skow.
Doug’s wishes were to have a private graveside service at West Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials in his name have been suggested to the American Cancer Society and the Disabled American Veterans.
