
Racine – Rose Marie G. Torgerson (née: Cournia), 86, passed away on Friday evening, November 22, 2013. She was born in Crookston, Minnesota on July 16, 1927, but was a Racine resident for most of her life. On June 12, 1947 she was married to the love of her life, Marvin Torgerson.
Rose worked as a cashier at Piggly Wiggly for 26 years, retiring in 1986. For 25 years she and Marv were “snowbirds” in Mesa, Arizona, where she enjoyed playing shuffleboard and cards with friends. Marv and Rose were avid campers in parks all over Wisconsin. In addition to sharing “cocktail hour” with Marv, Rose liked to bowl and loved to crochet wonderful afghans for her grandchildren. She was a long-time faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Rose is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Marvin; their loving children, Corinne Torgerson, Annette (Charlie) Basaldua, and Dave (Jill) Torgerson all of Racine, Morley (Erika) Torgerson of Mesa, Arizona, and Maureen (Steve) Foster of Fairview, N. Carolina; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Louis (Nancy) Cournia of Crookston; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Melvin Podevels of Franklin, Art (Gloria) Pretory of Hemet, California, Norma Mjelde of Moorhead, Minnesota, and Orlin (Jule Anne) Will of Jamestown, N. Dakota; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Ann (née: Mulvaney) Cournia; step-mother, Jenny Cournia; in-laws, Otto and Clarice Will; brothers and sisters, Leroy (Eleanor) Cournia, Del (Lorraine) Cournia, Esther (Bernard) Palubicki, Lauretta (Doc) Welter, Donna (Aubrie) Moran, Margaret Podevels, Betty Pretory, Anna Mae (Jack) Sullivan, Vonnie (Allen) Hoeft; and brother-in-law Vernon Mjelde.
Complete services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic church on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. Visitation will be from 9:15a.m. – 10:45 a.m., followed by the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ricardo Martin officiating. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Caledonia. Memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Church have been suggested.
