Stephen “Steve” Paul Spearman

September 8, 1960 – October 14, 2025

Stephen “Steve” Paul Spearman, age 65, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 8, 1960, he was the beloved son of the late Madison Herron and the late Elizabeth (Williams) Spearman.

Steve grew up on the South Side of Chicago and graduated from South Shore High School. In 1979, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly and honorably served until his discharge from active duty in May 1982.

Following his military service, Steve continued his education at Columbia College in Chicago. He worked in construction, at Acme Steel Mill, and later as a security officer. His lifelong commitment to supporting fellow veterans led him to serve for over thirteen years as a Dispatcher and Veteran Support Assistant with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Through his sense of humor and dedication, he made a meaningful difference in the lives of many. He retired from the VA in September 2025.

Steve found joy in life’s simple pleasures—spending time with family, working on his cars (especially his Ford Mustang and F-150 truck), and recently fixing up his home. His generosity, humor, and resilience will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Steve is survived by his loving daughter, Ciara Spearman; his cherished grandchildren, Jaycion and Zayvion; his brother, Joseph Spearman; and nieces and nephews: Rodrick, Leah, Shawndell, Freddie, Bryan, and Lydia. He also leaves behind a sister in law, extended family, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Spearman; father, Madison Herron; brother, Elbert Spearman; and sister, Virginia (Spearman) Valencia.

In keeping with Steve’s wishes, no formal service will be held. A private graveside service with military honors will be scheduled at a later date at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.

Testimonials

Our Memorial to “Mom”

Our family wants to thank Mike and the staff of Draeger-Langendorf for their compassion and caring in the death of our mother. They attended to every detail with such professionalism and made this difficult time so much easier by unburdening us of all that needs to be done with the arrangements. We all felt that there was nothing more they could have been done. It was perfect. We can now go forward with the memories that we hold in our hearts of mom and know that we provided the best possible service by choosing Draeger-Langendorf.
