Sylvester McClain, Jr.

Nov 25, 1939 – Jun 3, 2025

It is with a profound sense of loss and a deep appreciation for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Sylvester McClain Jr., who departed this world peacefully on June 3, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on November 25, 1939, in Enterprise, Mississippi, Sylvester’s journey through life was adorned with countless memories and cherished moments that will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

Sylvester spent much of his life in Racine, Wisconsin, where he became a beloved member of the community. He dedicated his career as a production operator for 32 faithful years with S.C. Johnson Wax, where his work ethic and commitment resonated with all who knew him.

Beyond his professional life, Sylvester was a man of many passions. An avid golfer, he found joy on the greens, participating in the S.C. Johnson golf league and the Pin Hi League, where he formed enduring friendships and created lasting memories. His love for the game extended beyond the local courses, as he traveled across the country to watch and play, celebrating the spirit of golf with enthusiasm and camaraderie.

In his earlier years, Sylvester also found solace in fishing, a hobby that brought him peace and relaxation. He thrived in the company of family and friends, often gathering to play cards and share stories, igniting laughter and joy in every gathering.

Sylvester is survived by his devoted wife of over 61 years, Shirley McClain; his beloved daughter, Sheila (Larry) McClain-Hull; his cherished sons, Sherrod McClain and Maurice (Yemi) McClain; adoring grandchildren, Kori, Trentin, Kelly, Theodore, Lawrence, Mariah, Karissa, Shayla, Stephen, Kevon, Kaila, and Sherrod, Jr.; five precious great-grandchildren; brother, Jack (Beverly) McClain; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. His legacy will be carried on through the love and memories shared by his family, reminding us all of the warmth and kindness he brought into the world.

Sylvester is preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Pearlie McClain, Sr.; daughter, Michelle Freeman; and sister, Essie Jean Gully-Nichols.

Testimonials

March 13, 2025

Thank you so very much for the exemplary care that you provided for both our mom and dad. Your family is extremely kind and exudes much empathy towards others. You and your staff display much professionalism with great talent and attention to detail. Mom and dad were always very particular in their appearance. Mom would say, You are leaving a lasting impression of yourself with someone to remember you by. Your parents taught you boys well; be very proud of that! Love on them, as death is so very permanent.

Holly and I are officially orphans now. It is people like your family and David Huck being there for us, that bring comfort when you are going through one of the most difficult challenges life throws at you.

I thank God every day for our Ostergaard family and will always cherish the memories.

Love you,

Jody Burlingame Wagner
