
It is with a profound sense of loss and a deep appreciation for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Sylvester McClain Jr., who departed this world peacefully on June 3, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on November 25, 1939, in Enterprise, Mississippi, Sylvester’s journey through life was adorned with countless memories and cherished moments that will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
Sylvester spent much of his life in Racine, Wisconsin, where he became a beloved member of the community. He dedicated his career as a production operator for 32 faithful years with S.C. Johnson Wax, where his work ethic and commitment resonated with all who knew him.
Beyond his professional life, Sylvester was a man of many passions. An avid golfer, he found joy on the greens, participating in the S.C. Johnson golf league and the Pin Hi League, where he formed enduring friendships and created lasting memories. His love for the game extended beyond the local courses, as he traveled across the country to watch and play, celebrating the spirit of golf with enthusiasm and camaraderie.
In his earlier years, Sylvester also found solace in fishing, a hobby that brought him peace and relaxation. He thrived in the company of family and friends, often gathering to play cards and share stories, igniting laughter and joy in every gathering.
Sylvester is survived by his devoted wife of over 61 years, Shirley McClain; his beloved daughter, Sheila (Larry) McClain-Hull; his cherished sons, Sherrod McClain and Maurice (Yemi) McClain; adoring grandchildren, Kori, Trentin, Kelly, Theodore, Lawrence, Mariah, Karissa, Shayla, Stephen, Kevon, Kaila, and Sherrod, Jr.; five precious great-grandchildren; brother, Jack (Beverly) McClain; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. His legacy will be carried on through the love and memories shared by his family, reminding us all of the warmth and kindness he brought into the world.
Sylvester is preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Pearlie McClain, Sr.; daughter, Michelle Freeman; and sister, Essie Jean Gully-Nichols.
A celebration of Sylvester’s life and homegoing with be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, 11:00am at Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home and Crematory, 4600 County Line Road. Visitation will be from 10:00am until the time of the homegoing service. Private burial will be held for the family at West Lawn Memorial Park. Please join us to celebrate Sylvester’s remarkable journey and the legacy of love that he leaves behind. All who knew Sylvester are invited to gather, reflect, and celebrate a life that was a blessing to so many.
