MOUNT PLEASANT – Arthur L. Hood (aka Art, Larry, Lawrence, Hood) 78, passed away at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee on Thursday, January 21, 2021. He fought a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma for 15 years, won and was in remission at the time of his death.

Arthur was born in Columbus, MS on July 10, 1942, the son of the late James T. and Mamie (nee: Moore) Hood. His family moved to Racine and Art graduated from William Horlick High School in 1960. He proudly served his nation with the US Army during the Vietnam War. On October 8, 1966, he married his sweetie, Margie Ann Person at Wayman AME Church. Art retired from SC Johnson Wax in 1997 after 30 years of service.

He loved spending time with family and friends. His passion was attending and participating in car shows with his ‘68 Camaro or ‘55 Sedan Delivery, driving through different states on The Power Tour, cruising the Dream Cruise in Woodward, Michigan, watching the NHRA Nationals in Indy, attending Tri Five Nationals in Kentucky and Back to the 50’s in Minnesota. You could find him in his garage working on his cars and racing his ‘67 Chevelle at Great Lakes Dragaway or walking his 10 plus laps at Regency Mall.

He was a member of North Shore Rods, Quick Times Classics, NHRA and IHRA, and Midwest Gassers. He was also a member of the SE Multiple Myeloma Support Group.

Art did not have any problems meeting people wherever he went. A simple “hello” could turn into an hour conversation. He was a good friend to countless people and was always willing to help anyone at any given time. He was friendly, kind hearted, compassionate, a good listener, an advisor, full of wisdom, strength, and had a witty sense of humor. He touched the lives of everyone that crossed his path. Many described him as a great man. To his girls he was everything. He was loved dearly and will be deeply missed.

Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Margie Hood; children, Samarria Hood-Williams, Pam Hood-Jones (James Jones); grandchildren, Zharisse and Zamarc Williams, Blakely Hood, Shatara, Najee and Tekayla Jones; great-grandchildren, Nila, Nayarei, Mialyn, Zakai, Nova, Blake, Bentley, Zahara, Nala’Jo, Nymearah, Lennyx, and Donovan; sister, Joyce Hood; brother, Maurice (Elizabeth) Hood; brothers-in-law, Elbert “Bud” and Tyrone Person, Leroy Williams, Sr; sister-in-law, Desiree Person; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends – too numerous to mention all by name.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mamie Hood; uncle, William Moore, aunts, Bessie Will Bush, Wilda Vaughn, and Helen Buckingham. Sisters-in-law, Carol Williams and Anita Person. Brothers-in-law Johnny Person and Cornell Person.

A special thank you to Dr. Hari, the medical team doctors and nurses at Froedtert Hospital for the care and compassion throughout the years.

Family and friends are invited to meet in the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home and Crematory on Friday, January 29, 2021 for a visitation from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Due to COVID-19 and a 50-person maximum, a private service with military honors for invited family members will take place at 6:00 p.m.  For those wishing to watch via livestream you may click on the following link at 6:00 p.m. https://youtu.be/Pu_YkGaTn4w  On Saturday January 30th, 2021 at 10:00 am he will be interred in the West Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

I don’t know where to begin. I met Margie and Larry when I was a teenager. There are no words to adequately describe what it means to have known Larry. A few words to describe him are; kind, compassionate, and caring.

To Margie, Marrie, Pam, and family, I pray that the memories of Larry will bring you comfort.

    God bless you! ❤

I was so saddened to hear of Art’s passing. I worked with Art for several years and enjoyed the experience immensely. He was such an interesting and friendly person and always had a smile on his face and a great laugh. I hope Art’s family can take comfort in his memory and in the wonderful man that he was. It was a privilege to know him.

Truly a pleasure to have known Art. We met Art through the North Shore Rods family and always enjoyed spending long days talking, or just sharing time with him. He truly made friends with whom ever he chanced to meet… a heartfelt person to say the least and his character was mirrored in his daughters, whom we met a number of times at car shows. Art always seemed especially proud when his family came around to some of the shows.
    Rest in peace dear friend.

  16. Bob n Jeanne OBrien says

Our deepest condolences Margie and family. Art was everything that was said in his obituary and more. Jeanne and I worked with Art over his long career and he was always the most positive person in the room. His laugh and smile could brighten your day. If you had a question he would help you out. Art was a wealth of knowledge with car questions. So many good memories and talks over coffee breaks. Rest In Peace Art. We will miss you.

Always looked forward to seeing Art and Maurice under the Castrol racing sign sitting up high on the very last bleacher seat row at Lucas Oil Raceway Indianapolis when I would go down there. We would talk about racing and life and had many laughs. Saw him again more recently out at Great Lakes Dragaway. Such a great man and spirit. Always willing to help you out and his kindness showed. He will be missed.

Art was a treasured friend. I really thought the world of him. I will miss not seeing him driving either the Camaro, Nomad or station wagon around town. I will miss not running into him at a store or the Grove. No matter how busy he was at the moment, he would always spend time to catch up. I will miss his smile and laughter and genuine love of life, family and race cars. I know this is a consistent story which so many of us share about Art. I wish that I could be with the family at the visitation but unfortunately have a conflict. My prayers for your family.

So sorry to hear about Art. I met Art 30+ years ago when I was staining his neighbors house. He had the garage door open and I saw his Camaro in there and just had to check it out. We talked for a while and shared stories about our cars. Fast forward about 10 years and we meet again as I am now working at Buy Right Auto and Art came in for parts. He remembered me from when we first met. I enjoyed his visits at Buy Right and going to miss his teasing about my car.

    January 29, 2021 at 3:26 pm

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Art’s entire family. Art was an inspiration to everyone in the Multiple Myeloma Support Group. Art, Margie, Samarria, and Art’s dear friend, who attended almost every meeting with him in solidarity, were welcoming to all newcomers to the group and no matter how he was feeling himself he always had a smile for everyone.. Art was a wealth of knowledge and was wonderful about helping to aleviate the fear of a new diagnosis. Most of us, Kathy included, never heard of Myleloma before being diagnosed. He was so happy when he spoke of Samarria following in his footsteps with a love for racing. We know he’ll be smiling down on her and cheering her on with each time trial or race. Art was a true inspiration to everyone he met His legacy will live on and we, as well as many others, will miss him.

Testimonials

October 22, 2015

Brian and the rest of the staff, we just wanted to take a moment to thank you for handling every detail of our mom’s (Vera Miller’s) funeral so expeditiously and flawlessly. Being here in North Carolina, I was worried about getting mom back to WI which was her wish. All I had to do was make one phone call to your office and you seamlessly got her from Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC back to WI.

All of the arrangements were so impeccable; pictures, book for signing, flowers, thank you and acknowledgement cards, arrangements with Graceland Cemetery, and even playing our slideshow with music and photos, and getting it to loop properly.

You took so much worry off of me and my siblings by professionally stepping in and handling everything for us. I was going a little crazy thinking I had to do it all, but you helped so much that we just needed to share these thoughts and feelings with others. Thank you for everything,

– Vicky Coerper, Janice Miller, Kenny Miller and Monica Bailey
