Racine, WI – Sonja Denise Cobb, 40, passed away unexpectantly on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at her residence.  She was born on September 22, 1980 in Racine to the late, Dorothy Cobb.

Sonja was a 1999 graduate of Horlick High School.  She also obtained Associate Degrees in Human Services and Early Childhood Education from Gateway Technical College.   She was employed at Racine Unified School District for 20 years as a Special Education Assistant.  She also worked in various afterschool programs, The Sports Complex, and in the classroom at various schools including Winslow and most recently, Mitchell Middle School.  In all of these positions, she touched the lives of many children, students, parents, teachers and staff.  She loved her job and was proud to be a part of Mitchell Middle School and most importantly, the Racine community.

Sonja was well known for her love of children; friendly, loud disposition, her infectious smile, her big heart and most of all her hair bonnet and makeup.  There is nothing she would not do for anyone as she learned early from her mother to always help those in need and to put others first.

She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten by her brothers, Michael (who she lovingly referred to as bruh bruh) of Racine, Clayton (Deepali Dewan), and niece Kryshna of Toronto, Canada.   Her aunts and uncles: Betty Thomas, Beverly Hicks, Janet Mitchell, Nola Starling-Cobb, Paul Cobb, Gary (Elaine) Cobb all of Racine, Wanda Cobb of Michigan and her many Cobb cousins (especially Lisa and Treva).  She is further survived by her partner, Carl Munger, his son (who she affectionately called her honorary son), Carl Jr., foster sons: Anjelito (Lito) and Ali (Bam) Guzman, her “sister” friends: Tina Jamison Simms, Dee Fields, and Teresa Miranda, her many friends and colleagues at Mitchell Middle School and many more of which there are too many to name.  Sonja was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy who she had a special mother daughter bond, her grandparents: Troy Sr. and Mozell Cobb, and her aunts and uncles: Ronnie, Vicki, O.C. and Troy Cobb, Michael Mitchell, Thomas Hicks, Wilma and Claude Rogers.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to The Coalition for Children, Youth & Families of the Wisconsin Foster Care and Resource Center.

Lastly, in honour of Sonja we ask that each of us reflect on the economic, racial and gender disparities prevalent in our healthcare system, institutions and society and think about how we all can make this world an equal and just place for all.

The Family will Celebrate Sonja’s Life on Monday, March 22, 2021, 11:00am in the chapel of Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home. Visitation will be in the chapel from 10:00am until the time of service.

The Public visitation will be held on Sunday, March 21, 2021, from 3:00pm – 6:00pm in the funeral home chapel.

    April 3, 2021 at 12:30 am

When I heard of the passing of this beautiful young women, I had to take a deep breath of unbelief and denial. This women made a big difference in the lives of those around her. She was wise with the youth, and could reach those considered unreachable and it has nothing to do with years of education it was a gift untouchable from the credits of man. Gifted by the Lord. The children she touched knew beyond a shadow of doubt that they were loved, thus they trusted her, making allowance for them to freely open up to Sonja because they knew she knew where they were coming from. Missed more than missed her spot can’t be replaced. I pray that we all make an unselfish difference not looking to be noticed such as Sonja. Most of all that we all come to know the Messiah as our Lord and Savior.

My condolences to her loved ones. I will cherish the memories I had been blessed to male with Sonja. The laughs we shared at Gateway Technical College and the memories of growing up in Racine together. I’ll miss that big beautiful smile and that infectious laugh of hers! God I won’t ask why just know you gained a beautiful soul. Rest in Heavenly peace until we meet again 🙏🏾 ❤️

October 22, 2015

Dear Bob,
I just wanted to thank you again for all your help and everything you did for my grandfather’s funeral. Looking back on it, I think Gramps would have been so proud of how everything turned out and it would not have been possible without your help. Your staff is amazing and has allowed us the grieve without worrying about the little details of everything that goes into making the arrangements and planning the services. You helped us honor one of the most amazing men in my life, and it meant so much to me personally and to my family. Thank you for everything.
Take care,
Jessie Tuttle
