Elsie Anna Squires, 96, formerly of Racine, passed away on December 1, 2023, at Azura Memory Care in Kenosha.  She was born in Kenosha on June 20, 1927, daughter of the late Joseph and Ollie (nee: Fourtner) Frederich.

Elsie was united in marriage to the love of her life, LaVerne “Vern” Squires on February 21, 1948, at Grace Lutheran Church in Racine.  Vern preceded her in death on September 27, 2008.

She and Vern built their house on 19th Street in Racine together.  They build a garage first to live in while the main house was under construction.  Vern and Elsie dug the foundation together with a shovel and a wheelbarrow.  She loved books, games, and jigsaw puzzles.

Elsie was an avid genealogist.  She started her journey in 1968 while helping her son, Rick, with a school family tree project.  She traveled to many places to sort through records and even to visit family members that she found in her search for family.

Elsie leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Audrey (Jack) Fedor; son, Richard (Leah) Squires; granddaughters, Monica Rodriguez, Lisa Holland; grandsons, Jay Holland, Andrew Holland; 7 great-grandchildren; 3, great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dot Frederich; other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

In addition to her parents, Elsie is preceded in death by her husband, LaVerne “Vern” Squires; son, Joseph Squires; brother, Henry “Hank” Frederich; sisters, Irene (Harvey) Spauling, and Leona (Don) Lucas.

A celebration of Elsie’s life will be held on Friday, December 29, 2023, 11:00am, at Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home and Crematory, 4600 County Line Road.  Visitation will be from 10:00am until the time of the funeral.  A burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park.

The family would like to extend a heart-felt “Thank You” to the entire staff at Azura Memory Care in Kenosha for the excellent care given to Elsie during this difficult time.

My dear sweet Elsie, You will always be in my heart. The first day I met you, I knew we would have this wonderful friendship bond. I promised you I would come and visit you three times a week. I think I kept my promise. As you said “Our pinky promise”. You loved my banana bread and would meet me at the door waiting for me to bring you some. Yes, I only knew you for around 6 months, but, our bond was one most friends never have. I am so glad that I was able to give you your nice blue sweater that kept you so nice and warm during your last days. I loved how you called me Grandma. You would call out for me when you got frustrated…You are at peace now. You kept telling me you wanted to go home, well, God has chosen to take you home now. You are at peace…

Robin and I always enjoyed the time we spent with Ma Squires. From Audrey and Jacks wedding till the last time we had pizza at Derango’s. Ma’s whit and stories of the past family history always intrigued us. We got to meet Vern and talk about wood. And raspberries, the big Oak tree and watch their family grow. We will continue to be part of their family for as long as we are able. we have always felt like an adopted Aunt Robin and Uncle Jerry. May our Lord bless you, keep you all safe and healthy through the new year.
