Avonna "Vonnie" Ann Prager

Oct 8, 1934 – Jul 6, 2024

Service Details

A celebration of Vonnie’s life will be held on a later date. Please see the funeral home website in the future for further information.

Avonna Ann Prager, known affectionately as Vonnie, 89, was born on October 8, 1934, in Waterloo, IA, and peacefully passed away on July 6, 2024, in Kenosha, WI, surrounded by her loving family. She leaves behind a legacy filled with love, compassion, and dedication to her community.

Vonnie graduated from East High School in Waterloo, IA, in 1952. She earned her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College, now University of Northern Iowa. Vonnie was united in marriage to William R. Prager on April 2, 1960, in Berkeley, CA. Throughout her career from 1976 until 1987, Vonnie diligently fulfilled her role as a teacher in the Highland Park Public Schools, instilling knowledge and inspiration in countless young minds. Her passion for education and kindness touched the hearts of many students and colleagues alike.

Vonnie’s artistic talents shone brightly through her love of drawing and painting in watercolors, showcasing her creativity and vision. She also found joy and solace in her bond with horses, as a member of the Mundelein Equestrian Club, reveling in the beauty and freedom of riding. A devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Deerfield, IL, and later in Kenosha, WI, Vonnie’s faith and sense of community were unwavering. Her spirit of generosity was felt by all who knew her, as she selflessly volunteered at Hospice Alliance in Pleasant Prairie, bringing comfort and companionship to those in need. She trained her Airedale Terrier, Ready, to be an emotional support animal to assist her in this endeavor.

Vonnie’s deep bond with her husband, Bill Prager, and her children, Chris and Stephanie Prager, Teryn and Rick Morrell, and grandchildren, Katherine and Molly Prager, defined the core of her life. Her spirit of love and strength will forever live on in their hearts. Vonnie’s memory will also be cherished by her good friends, Colene, Janice, AJ, Heidi, and Marge.

Vonnie is preceded in death by her parents, Mader and Olga Hansen, brothers, Vernon Hansen, Arlo Hansen, sister, Vivian Hansen, and good friends, Diane, Sally, Joyce, and Jane.

A celebration of Vonnie’s life will be held on a later date. Please see the funeral home website in the future for further information.

The Prager family would like to extend a heart-felt “Thank You” to the staff at Hospice Alliance, for their dedication to providing comfort and care to Vonnie, as well as many others in their time of need.

Vonnie’s memory will be forever cherished, and her legacy of kindness, artistry, and generosity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her.

I remember Vonnie when I worked at Brookside. She was a sweet lady and I remember her love for horses and Airedale terriers. My since condolences

Testimonials

October 9, 2020

I would like to thank Mike Langendorf, Bill Althaus and the rest of the staff for the wonderful celebration of the life for my father Raymond L. Szymanski who was a WWII veteran. I especially appreciate how much you really listen and the questions you asked regarding who my father was and what he was all about. Those details showed up in every part of the service from the flowers, the music, the thank you’s, pictures, obituary, outdoor military honors, etc. etc. My father would have been so grateful for the way you honored his life. I also received phone calls from family and friends indicating how beautiful the service was in every way. You and your staff definitely go above and beyond. You treat everyone like family and your compassion is so genuine. There should be more people in the world just like all of you. No words can express our gratitude for all you have done for myself, my father and our family. Thank you so very much and may the Lord bless you and yours! Sincerely Terri Carls and the Szymanski Family
