MOUNT PLEASANT –

MOUNT PLEASANT – Mr. James D. Wiechers, 87, passed away at Ascension All Saints on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

He was born in Racine on April 23, 1937, the son of the late James Leonard and Edna (nee Davidson) Wiechers.  He spent his early years with his family in Racine and Oklahoma, returning to Racine and attending Washington Park High School.  He graduated with the class of 1954.

He married Carol Hlavka on July 16, 1959, in Waukegan, IL with the marriage being blessed at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in October 1959 by Rev. Dr. Melvin A. Miritz.

Jim worked with computers all his life beginning at the cutting edge of computer technology at Massey Ferguson.  He also worked at Walkers (Tenneco), Hamlin, Inc. in Lake Mills, WI, Menco in Springfield, IL, and Western Publishing.  He retired from JI Case but continued with contract work at various places in the Midwest.

Jim was a member of Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church.  He was always interested in science and was a lifelong subscriber to Scientific American from age 12.  His interest in science(s) led to decades long fascinations in, and pursuit of, Quantum Physics.  He loved to bike and was an avid runner.  He was a golfer and especially loved living immediately across the street from the golf club in Lake Mills. He had deep empathy for all of God’s creatures. His greatest memories were times spent watching and participating in his children and granddaughter’s own life journeys.

Jim’s mind-set was always a glass half full and he diligently attempted to speak ill of none.

In addition to Carol, Jim is survived by his children, James David Wiechers, Jr., Caryl “Sue” (Mark) Schuit, and Matthew James Wiechers; his granddaughter, Anastasia Marie Wiechers; his sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Dean) Schneider, and Lynn (Rich) Zmijewski; his brothers-in-law, Jim Hlavka, Lee (Zsuzsanna) Hlavka, Rick Hlavka, John (Carol) Hlavka, Kevin (Linda) Hlavka, and Brian (Julie) Hlavka; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Gayle (Ray) Engstrom; his brother, Lesley Wiechers; his mother-in-law, Fern (Hlavka) Gissel; his father-in-law, John (Fern) Hlavka; and his sisters-in-law, Georgia Lyn Hlavka, Judy (Jim) Heather, Judy Hlavka, and Sandy Hlavka.

Family and friends are invited to meet in the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home and Crematory on Monday, January 27, 2025, for a visitation from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm.  A service honoring and celebrating his life will take place at 12:00 pm.   His interment will follow at Mound Cemetery.

Testimonials

October 22, 2015

It has been a long while in business since I have experienced and witnessed someone be truly great at what they do. That was my experience with Mike and team. Above and beyond hardly encompasses their professionalism and compassion during our family’s bereavement.

Thank you most sincerely,
Jason C.
