Service Details

Friends and family are invited to celebrate George’s life at the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home and Crematory on Thursday, May 22, 2025, with a visitation from 4:00 – 6:00 pm, followed by a service at 6:00 pm, officiated by Rev. James Roemke.

Military Honors will be presented at the conclusion of the service. Interment will be at Glen Oaks Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois, on Friday at 11:00 am.

KENOSHA – A century of life, marked by service, dedication, and a love for the outdoors, came to a close for Mr. George H. Peter, Sr., age 101, who passed away surrounded by family & friends on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

Born in Rhinelander on Sept. 22, 1923, to Eugene Gibson and Hedwig Bertha Peter. George was raised by his maternal grandparents in Mercer following the early passing of his mother.

George married Dorothy F. Anderson on June 6, 1944, and though she preceded him in death in 1971, their time together was cherished. A proud US Navy veteran of WWII, George bravely served at the Battle of Okinawa aboard the LSM(R)198. His commitment to his country continued over 50+ years of membership in the American Legion, recently Kenosha Post 21 (details at alpost21.com).

For 63 years, George was a dedicated pattern maker at Chicago Cutting Die, retiring in 2009.

A faithful member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Kenosha, George found strength and comfort in his faith, reading scripture until his final days.

A passionate firearms enthusiast and skilled gunsmith, George was a lifetime supporter of the NRA and a dedicated member of the Oak Park Sportsmen’s Club, the Conservation Club of Kenosha, and the Bristol Gun Club. As a range officer and hunter education teacher at Bristol.

He is survived by the children of his longtime loving companion, Patricia Box (who preceded him in death): James (Fay) Box and Jody Box; his granddaughters, Vanessa Blue and Bhavani Abe; his great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Christopher, and Yoshi; his sister, Jeanette Downes; and many loving nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his son, George (Susan) Peter, Jr., and numerous brothers and sisters.
