RACINE – Chalmers Cummings Jr., age 86, answered the call of our Lord and Savior on Friday, August 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Chalmers, affectionately known to everyone as “Junior” was born on October 4, 1938, to Chalmers Sr. and Chappel (Nee: Harris) Cummings in Mantachie, MS.

Junior was educated in the Fulton, MS, School System. During his high school years, Junior was an outstanding basketball player. It was during his basketball years he met Miss Annie Flake. Little did they know she would someday become his bride. Junior graduated high school in 1957, and shortly thereafter moved to Racine, WI, to live with his sister. Once in Racine, he gained employment with American Motors in Kenosha, WI. In 1960, Junior traveled back to Mississippi to get his soon-to-be and much awaiting bride-to-be, Annie. Once they returned to Racine, they were married on April 22, 1960. To this union three beautiful children were born.

In Junior’s early years, he was an avid and well-known basketball referee throughout the Racine Community. He was also an outstanding pool player and won many trophies. Junior loved traveling. Each Christmas he made sure he took his family to Mississippi. Junior was employed with American Motors (Chrysler) for many years, retiring after 30 years of service. After retirement, he didn’t just sit down, he drove motorcoach buses for St. Paul Church Transportation and eventually Jones Travel Bus Service, for many years before retiring again.

Junior was a faithful member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years serving in many capacities. During his tenure, he served as manager of our Church Transportation Department, making sure our motorcoach buses were mechanically sound before they hit the road, as a Trustee, as a Sunday School Teacher and as president and member of our Senior Usher Board for many years until his health began to decline. In 2020, when his health would no longer allow him to be a doorkeeper in the Lord’s House, Junior was moved to Emeritus status on our Senior Usher Board. He sported the Emeritus title, but this did not stop him from coming to church, sitting down on the back pew and giving directions from the Usher’s Pew.

Junior leaves to cherish his precious memories, his loving Wife: Annie Cummings; Son: David Cummings; Grandchildren: Geoffrey Cummings, Jordan Cumming, Carl Cummings, Chrystal Cummings, Greyson Cummings, and Kayla Price; Great-Grandchildren: Ayele Bolton and Jordan Cummings, Jr.; Siblings: Agnes Lee, and A.C. (Esther) Cummings; Nieces and Nephews: Renee Robinson, Carl Miller, Kenneth Miller, Dana Reed, Ikesha Cummings, Tiffany Lee-Christian, Tamika Lee-Hamlin, Daphne Hamby, and Veronica Morris; and Sister-in-law: Alene Horton. He is further survived by a hold of other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his children: Cheryl Nunn and Dwight Cummings; his parents: Chalmers (Chappel) Cummings, Sr.; In-laws: Mondo (Illa) Flake; Siblings: Lurlene Flint, Clytee Miller, Claster Cummings and Frank Cummings; Sisters-in-law: Marilyn Smith and Rosene Morris.

Family and friends are invited to meet at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church (1120 Grand Ave. Racine) on Saturday, August 9, 2025, for a visitation from 10:00 am – 11:00 am.   A service celebrating his life and Homegoing will follow at 11:00 am with Bishop Lawrence L. To the family of Mr. Cummings, I send my sincere condolences. Some of my most fondest memories of Mr. Cummings are of me running late to church. He would look at his watch and then smile. You were never going to ask his friendly tongue lashing. I pray that God’s love will bring you peace and comfort as you grieve the loss of Ms. Cummings.

Testimonials

The Family of Barbara Bell

Michael,

First, let me start out by saying you were a God sent working with me for many years in preparations for my mom’s Homegoing Celebration December 7, 2024. Even though this was our first time meeting in person, I felt like I already knew you. Michael, you demonstrated professionalism, empathy and, your warmth was surprising for me considering your role as a Funeral Director. Your attention to every detail, patient and support has made this process much easier for my family and me. I trusted you and you helped me find closure in a moment of great sadness, and for that we’re eternally grateful. I appreciate the time and energy you put into ensuring everything ran smoothly considering I reside in a different state. Michael, my mom would have loved you and our family is forever grateful for your unwavering dedication and support during our season of grief. May the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you. (Numbers 6:25)
