James R. Hammes MD

Service Details

The family will conducting a Memorial Mass at St. Mary by the Lake Catholic Church, 7605 Lakeshore Dr. here in Racine, on Saturday, June 7th at 11:00 a.m. followed by full military honors. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass.

Memorial Suggestions

In lieu of flowers the family has suggested memorials to St. Mary by the Lake Catholic Church.

Dr. James R. Hammes, 95, of Wind Point, passed away at his residence on Sunday, May 25, 2025. He was born in Racine on July 23, 1929 the son of the late Michael and Ceclia Hammes.

Dr. Hammes attend St. Rose Catholic School, graduated from Washington  Park School, obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Miami, graduated from Northwestern University Medical School, interned at Harper Hospital in Detroit, MI, graduated from Northwestern University Department of Surgery, and served his residency at Northwestern Hospital. Dr. Hammes served his country during the Korean War as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico.      Dr. Hammes was a member of St. Mary by the Lake Catholic Church, the Racine Medical Society, serving as it’s President in 1979, and the American Academy of Orthopedics.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara (nee: Workman); their three children, Guy Hammes, of Hopedale, MA, Chad Hammes, of Sherman Oaks, CA, and Kim Hammes Frank, of Mequon, WI; grandchildren, Meredith Frank, of Houston, TX, Maddie Frank, of Louisville, CO, Tyler Hammes, of Austin, TX, Nel Hammes, Logan Hammes, both of Sherman Oaks, CA; nieces and nephews, Mike Hammes, of Burlington, WI, Jay Hammes, of Racine, Jon Hammes, of Mequon, Julie Rupnow, of Racine, Lynette Reiter, of Milwaukee, Miche Priaulx, of Saukville, Carrie Hammes, of Duluth, MN, Janet Hammes, of Racine, and Donna Hammes, of Milwaukee. In addition to his parents, Dr. Hammes was preceded in death by his brothers, Don Hammes and Elroy Hammes; and his sister, Vera Priaulx.
