Jean K. Smith “Mama Jean” born June 22nd1933, in Florence, Alabama was called to be with the Lord peacefully, amongst loved ones, on January 9th 2026, at the blessed age of 92.
Jean was the daughter of the late Euguene & Clara Key and was the first of four children, Joe & Lois who proceeded her in death and her surviving brother Benny Key of Kentucky.
From her youth Jean’s gift of love and compassion for others was apparent to all that came across her path. The evidence of God’s love flowed from her daily life and touched the life of many. Jean completed her schooling in Alabama and moved to Chicago Illinois, for better work opportunities.
Jean met and married Elza Smith Sr. and they were the parents of three children, Lois Taylor, Thomas Smith Sr. and Elza Smith Jr. who proceeded her in death.
Jean was an energetic person and a proficient employee, working diligently in love and dignity, as all that she did she did as unto the Lord. Jean retired from the Four Seasons Hotel where her committed efforts did not go unnoticed as she was promoted from room domestic engineer to front line lobby ambassador. It was in this assignment that her energy and love was seen to all, prompting her to receive much recognition and praise from guest and employees alike.
Jeans love for her family was evident daily and her heart of love caused her to pray for not only her family but to all those that asked for prayer. Her prayers of faith for many were unmatched and is a part of her legacy and life story.
One of the greatest joys Momma Jean enjoyed was cooking for her family and whomever came to her home, the food along with the welcoming joyous smile and hardy laugh made anyone feel at peace and comfort in her presence.
Jean accepted Christ at an early age and was born again into the Pentecostal Faith in 1976 under the leadership of Bishop Cornelius Southern and the Grace Apostolic Faith Church. There she was a faithful member for several years and worked on the usher board. Jean later became a missionary that carried the God ordained mantel of prayer, her life of prayer and fasting produced results and caused many to call on Momma Jean for prayer because they knew God would respond to her cry.
In 2004 Jean moved to Racine Wisconsin where she Joined The Church of The Redeemed under the leadership of her grandson Pastor Ronald Taylor, Momma Jean’s praise of Halleluiah can still be heard in the sanctuary and her life of prayer was evident to all.
Beside her own family Momma Jean had many spiritual children that she showed love and compassion to and when they called her, she would respond with patience and prayer. Her legacy is stamped in history as a prayer warrior for all that asked.
Even though Momma Jean is not here, her heritage and her voice rings in our hearts and minds. One of her favorite saying cannot escape our conscience “ God is good! He is better than good! I just don’t know how to say it”
Momma Jean the matriarch of the Smith and Taylor family leaves to cherish her memories, to her daughter Lois Taylor of Wisconsin, her son Thomas Smith (Yolonda ) two special daughters ,Augustine Harris and Lavetta Smith, her brother, Benny ( Andrea) of Kentucky , a special friend Glenda Beckwith of Florence Alabama.
