Racine, WI – Robert Leon Hicks Sr., age 88, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Ascension All Saints in Racine, Wisconsin.  He was born in Maury City, Tennessee on February 28, 1933, to the late Leroy and Florence (nee: Koonce) Hicks.

On November 28, 1953, Robert married the love of his life, Lula M. Thurmond and they were blessed with 56 years of marriage. Sadly, Lula passed away on February 6, 2009. In April of 1956, at the age of 23, Robert moved to Racine with his family. After receiving his high school diploma, Robert worked numerous jobs. Later, as time went on, Robert was employed by Webster Electric (Danfoss) Fluid Power Company. He worked there for over 25 years. After his retirement from Webster, Robert was then employed by InSinkErator (Mahler) Company for 19 years.

Robert spent most of his life working and taking care of his family.  He was very dedicated to his wife and children. He loved taking his annual trip every July for family gatherings in Tennessee.

Robert was a very proud man. He was a great husband, dad, grandfather, uncle and brother to all.  He was well-known for his unique style of dressing.  Robert was named after his dad’s twin brother, his name was also Robert.

Robert was also an active member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed singing in the male choir and the (community) choir.  At age 83, when he stopped working, he spent most of his time with his family.  He enjoyed watching his favorite basketball team “The Milwaukee Bucks”. He was surely a true fan, even if they lost a game.

Robert also enjoyed watching Steve Harvey’s “Family Feud” and old western TV programs.  He loved listening to the old blues and gospel songs late at night.

Robert is survived by his four daughters; Cassandra (Rayford) Milton, Shirley A. Hicks, Vickie (Carl) Robinson and Sharon Y. Hicks, all of Racine, WI; his eleven grandchildren; Narkisaj Hicks, Kiyoa (Joseph) Berryman, Roneasha T. Payne, Untaurus Milton, Lamar (Ambria) Hicks, Shacarla (Francisco) Robinson Garcia and Keyshaun T. L. Hicks seven great-grandchildren, one sister, Lucy Curtis, five sisters-in-law; Barbara Hicks, Beverly Hicks, Annie Hicks, Eula Strayhorn and Ruthie Jacox and one brother-in-law Otha B. Thurmond and a special friend Alice Poole

In addition to his parents and wife, Lula, Robert is preceded in death by his son, Robert Leon Hicks, Jr., two sisters; Opalene Smith and Rebecca Johnson; one sister-in-law Loraine Morgan; three brothers; Curtis E. Hicks, Walter Ray Hicks and Thomas L. Hicks and seven brothers-in-law; Amos Smith, Leonard Johnson, Sr., Willie Curtis, Charles Helen, Joe W. Thurmond, Charles Morgan and Willie Strayhorn.

A Celebration of Robert’s life will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2022, 12:00pm, in the chapel of Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home, 4600 County Line Road.  Visitation will be from 11:00am until the time of the service.  Entombment will take place in West Lawn Memorial Park in Racine, WI.

Mr. Hicks was such a great man, in a quiet way. I considered him to be such of good example of a man who took care of the family and home God gave Him. I also felt welcome and secure visiting in his home with him, Mrs. Hicks, and his children. We go back many years to my teenage years of working with his son Robert Jr, at the Journal times, and becoming close to the entire family. I have fond memories of Mr. Hicks coming to Gregg Chapel singing with the Male Chorus of Second Baptist. That meant so much to me. He embraced my life well. I know he may seem absent now, but I know he is present with the Lord! Please know that myself and the Gregg Chapel CME Church family uplift you in prayer for peace, strength, and hope.
