RACINE – Mrs. Lorraine H. Lekas, 91, passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.
She was born in LaValle, WI on August 30, 1922, the daughter of the late Alfred and Iva (nee: Schwartz) Whiteley. Mrs. Lekas grew up in Baraboo but spent most of her adult life in Racine. On April 25, 1945, she married Robert Irwin Lekas. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1990.
Mrs. Lekas worked over 27 years at Sentry Food Store both as a checker and later, bakery manager. She was a devoted member of the First Church of God and enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. Her love for music inspired her to sing for the troops with her sisters during WWII and later learned to play the guitar and French horn. Above all else, her greatest joy was to be in the company of her family.
She is survived by her children, Diane (Jim) Haase and Gary Lekas; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Joshua) Streit, Jeremy (Terasa) Haase all of Racine; Sarah (Thiago) Evangelista of Anaheim, CA, Noah (Elizabeth) Lekas of San Clemente, CA, Joshua Lekas of Racine; her great grandchildren, Jessica, Julia, Jacob, Jaden, Mason, Mikayla, Nathan, Kira, Mauro, Matheus, Joshua, Jr., Lance, Chloe and Alexis; her sister, Verleen Pluhar of Anaheim, CA; Lorraine’s very dear and loving friend and partner, Tom Turner, Sr. of Racine; as well as many special nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lekas was also preceded in death by her son, Robert Alan Lekas; her brother and sister, Dean Whiteley and Beverly Dehnert; brothers-in-law, Charles Pluhar, Paul (Marjorie) Lekas and sister-in-law, Mary (Steve) Olsen.
Family and friends are invited to meet at the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Friday evening for a visitation from 5-8 p.m. Her life and funeral service will be celebrated at the First Church of God (1650 Lathrop Ave.) on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m . There will also be a visitation in the church on Saturday from 9:30 – 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials have been suggested to the First Church of God.
The Lekas family extends a very special thank you to the Wheaton Franciscan Hospice; especially Cathy and Tamara and Dr. Thomas Goodrich for the loving and special attention they provided while under their care.
