Rosie Mae Haynes

Mar 27, 1945 – Feb 20, 2025

Service Details

Homegoing services for Rosie will be celebrated on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 11:00 am in Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home with Pastor Taurus Pinson officiating. Visitation will be in Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of service. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery.

Rosie Haynes (West) born 3/27/1945 to Lucy West (Coleman) and Roosevelt West. Both parents preceded Rosie in death.

Momma was born in Tunica, Mississippi and moved to Memphis as a child. Mom is eldest of 4 siblings, George West (preceded in death), Dorothy Jean Smith, Esau West and Jacob West (preceded in death). Mom grew up in South Memphis and attended Caver High School. Mom married dad (Leroy Haynes). Mom had 5 live births as she called it. Jacqueline West, Michael West, Sandra Seck (Haynes), Bessie Haynes, and Audry Pierre (Haynes). After several years, Mom moved to Chicago. She attended a few colleges in Chicago, studying social work sciences and then cosmetology. She later finished cosmetology in Racine, WI. Yes, she beat us for what she thought were poor grades. She was quite a verbal and physical disciplinarian. Mom accepted Christ at an early age. Sometimes it led me to believe it was forced by her elders, other times it was ok. I could remember her telling me she was forced to go to church 7 days a week and she had 3 or 4 dresses (blue, black and white). She never made us go to church, but on our long walks she would point out every church along the way. When we were older and went to church, every Friday or Saturday we got a new dress, skirt or 4-piece suit until we had many. She supported all her children’s educational activities. She was very happy that we made church a major part of our life. She was happy to pay church dues, buy anniversary clothes and do our hair. Those who knew her just knew she was the best hair stylist in Racine with or without a license. She had no desire to do hair in the shop, so the kitchen or dining room were her places to do hair. When we were children, she worked at Lincoln Lutheran as a nurse’s assistant. In 1986, she added factory work to her resume, retiring from Racine Plating.

Mom leaves behind 4 children; Jacqueline (Nesey) West, Leroy (Chekita) Blaine Haynes, Michael Haynes-West, Sandra Seck, and Audrey Pierre; sister, Dorothy Smith Dot Jean; brother, Esau West. Many grandchildren; Terrica West, Dereemeyun Haynes, Quoenchadta Day, Elizabeth (Brittany) Sanders, Michael Miller, Keith Brown, Jr., Leroy West, Territa Seward, Sabreasha Haynes, Darius (Keveesha) West, Chavez Shannon Hayes, Jr., Naa Ajanaku, Lamine Haynes and Dorian Haynes. Loving Aunt Bernice (Trail); nieces, Lynn, Shelia, Tornesha Freeman-Coleman; nephews, Terry, Kerry, and other family members. Great grands; Tonila, Milia, Angel, Timir, Arvin Day, Keeke, Tae, Zari, Rae-Rae, Nubi, Marion, Lil “L”, Tavoya (Jermi) McClain. If your name was missed, Mom in heaven still loves you as do her children. She taught “love.” Preceded in death by her husband, both parents, 2 brothers, 2 daughters and many family members and friends.

I will surely miss my niece. She was dear to my heart. Every time we were together we smiled and laughed. We shared great childhood memories at our house, picking cotton, going to church and just playing together with our siblings and cousins outside. I will always love you, Rose

Testimonials

May 25, 2021

My family wants to thank you and your team for all that you did to walk along side us in my mom’s death and celebration of life. You all did an amazing job with such care, concern of details, and sensitivity to our family. I know my moms body was treated respectfully in your care and that meant the world to us to have confidence in that.
