It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas “Tom” McCarthy, age 83, who passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026.
Born on June 17, 1942, in Racine, Wisconsin, Tom was the son of Dennis McCarthy and Mabel McCarthy. He attended South Milwaukee High School before being drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Tom served as a Radio Relay and Carrier Operator from 1964-1966.
On August 3, 1988, Tom was united in marriage to Colleen Sather. Together with their daughters they enjoyed many fun years together, camping at Willow Mills in Rio. Our step family bonded as true family during those special summers there. Tom and Colleen also enjoyed many wonderful years together, traveling, going to casinos, and spending time with their fur babies Holly, Lilly, Molly, and Sadie.
Tom dedicated 22 years of employment to SC Johnson, where he worked as a Unit Manager in production and warehouse operations. Following his retirement from SC Johnson, he opened his own Travel agency, Uniglobe Travel. After he closed the doors to his agency, Tom continued working at Potawatomi Casino, where he advanced from dealer to pit boss and eventually became a trainer for new dealers. This is where he truly found his calling.
Outside of work, Tom lived a full and active life centered around family, sports, and community. Before entering military service, he raced stock cars, and he always regretted not going back to it after the service. For many years he played city league softball with team Consumer Steel where he met many of his life long friends. Tom had the highest pitching arc, and he could fool some of the best batters in the league. He also enjoyed bowling, and although he never got the 300 game he dreamed of, he did get into the bowling hall of fame as having the most splits in a single game. He had so much fun in his several leagues through his life, but most especially with his Monday night league at Paradise West, the Sturtevant Business Men. Tom was also known for working the chains on the football field for the Racine Gladiators before they became the Racine Raiders. He also enjoyed his time being an assistant basketball coach for Prairie school. A devoted Wisconsin sports fan, he especially loved cheering on the Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks.
Tom will be deeply missed by his loving family, including his daughters, Laura (Herb) Mai, Carrie McCarthy, Erica (AJ) Paul, Carrie Hogard, and Robin Monosa; his brother, Joe (Norma) Wicinski; his grandchildren, Alyssa (Brian) Niechlanski, Jacob Poffenberger, Kayla Haggardy, Madison (Marcus) Gordon, Matthew (Cassidy) Hogard, Ashley (Zach) Carner, Jared Mai, Andrew Poffenberger, Sierra Hogard, Ryan Mai, Lauren Mooney, Ashley Mooney, Kadence Mooney, Jo Mooney, Grayson Paul and Spencer Paul. Tom also had very special relationships with his sister in laws Cindy Sather and Carol (Dell) Halverson.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Colleen McCarthy; his parents, Dennis and Mable McCarthy; his daughter, Shelli McCarthy; and his siblings, Diane Mahlandt, Joan Fisher, and Richard Wicinski.

The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful team on the 5th floor at Ascension hospital. They treated our dad like he was a member of their own family and we will forever be grateful.
